Think you’re a word champ?  Try your hand at a selection of fun word games the whole family can play.

Blackout Poetry

Let your inner artist/poet play during this activity with Kris Kelly in which you choose words on pages from magazines, newspapers, or books and isolate them to create a poem. Then add an illustration by drawing or coloring the rest of the page around your words.  

One Sheet Wonder Book/Zine

Marianne Monaghan will show you how easy it is to make your own book from one sheet of paper.  Two types of books will be made: a house book or an 8-page mini book or zine.  Each book will have plenty of space to write or draw your own story.

Super Say-In Story Tell-In Anime

You are an alien with super powers from a planet light years away.  How and where do you use your powers for good?  Explore anime and manga with this art activity led by Keilah Yisrael.

Tom Evert will lead kids and parents in this activity choosing words and pairing movements with them that combine to tell a story accompanied by music.

Create a Graffiti Selfie with positive, confidence building words, letters, and drawings with Rozenia Cunningham from Art it Yourself.

Noted local storyteller, Robin Echols Cooper, takes listeners on an animated journey with her stories from “Another Branch of Life” series.

Lake Erie Ink

Bananagram®  Contest

Inspired by a popular Lake Erie Ink event, our Bananagram® Contest is perfect for all ages.  Bananagrams® is a fast-paced game using letter tiles to make words in a grid.  The first team to use all their tiles is claimed Top Banana.  Bring your family and friends and get ready to claim the crown.  If you would like to participate, be sure to register in advance when you arrive at Play on Words.

Lake Erie Ink

Mining the Story is a 45-minute prose workshop led by Sony Ton-Aime.


Sessions & activities will be conducted by the following artists and instructors:

Robin Echols Cooper is a storyteller, performing, and visual artist who has been telling stories professionally since 1992. Robin grew up in Chardon, Ohio, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications with minors in art and theater from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. https://rechocooper.wixsite.com/storytelling

Rozenia Cunningham is the founder of Art It Yourself studio that calls Shore Cultural Centre home. Rozenia enjoys teaching and sharing art explorations with everyone from toddlers to adults. She is a professional artist whose work has been featured in local exhibits. She is a member of the Euclid Art Association, Cleveland West Art League, and the Collinwood Art Association. http://www.artityourself.com/

Tom Evert is a native of Ohio and holds degrees in both painting and dance from Ohio University. He toured internationally with the Paul Taylor Dance Company prior to forming his own company DancEvert. He now devotes his energies and talents to presenting workshops for teachers on integrating the arts into the core curriculum. http://www.dancevert.org/

Kris Kelly, PhD. teaches writing at the Writing Resource Center at Case Western Reserve University. She also studies and writes about digital literature and teaches a class on experimental narratives and media.

Marianne Monaghan believes that everyone has a story worth telling and a hidden artistic talent waiting to emerge. She likes to help people enjoy the creative process without stressing about the final product.

Aaron Parker has channeled his lifelong interest in art and drawing into a career as a photographer. After his military service, Aaron moved his business into Shore Cultural Centre and devotes his energies to being Euclid’s premier photographer. http://www.parkerfotos.com/

Sony Ton-Aime is the Program Operation Coordinator at Lake Erie Ink. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the NEOMFA program and a BBA in Accounting from Kent State University. Keilah Yisrael, currently pursuing an education degree, has drawn just about every day of her life to improve her skills towards her interest in animation and storytelling. Keilah’s favorite media is color pencil, digital, and watercolor. She is a member of the Euclid Art Association, and has been in a number of the Euclid Art shows and at present has work on display at Euclid City Hall.

Lake Erie Ink provides creative expression opportunities and academic support for youth in the Greater Cleveland Community. Lake Erie Ink believes that creative writing is not only for youth who love to write but for those who feel they have something to say yet are often ignored. https://lakeerieink.org/
